Seriously Montreal, What the Fuck

I’ll be honest with you guys, I thought I’d seen it all in my own little gray, Manhattan bubble. But Jesus Christ, no thrift store I’ve ever seen could have prepared me for Eva B. Boutique/Café on Blvd. Saint-Laurent in Montreal.

First of all, I feel obligated to mention that the owner is, without the slightest hint of exaggeration, insane.  I walked in, and the dude (who looks like and even more disheveled version of Danny DeVito) was shirtless and making samosas amid a neon sea of dusty fabrics. Even the golden retriever whom I’m fairly certain resides there, looked a little queasy.

As far as the scenery goes, no photos can do it full justice. Picture the rabbit hole scene in that shitty 90’s remake of Alice in Wonderland. There’s a mountain of clothes in the back that’s deeper than an above ground swimming pool, where everything costs one dollar. For those wondering how safe it is, let’s just say I saw a young woman who was practically consumed by the structure after a thicket of corduroy collapsed underneath her feet.

But don’t get the wrong impression, as far as thrift stores go, this place was pretty above the mark. It’s three floors of mostly women’s clothes from every decade worth seeking.  And the vibe was so friendly that I was even swayed into eating a few complimentary tortilla chips that were on display outside, a decision which would have been nothing short of suicidal had I done it in New York.
